Booth Update

Yesterday I went down to Angel's Crossing Antique Mall and Flea Market (I hadn't been in two weeks).  Paydays occur on the 15th of the month and the last day of the month.  My first payday... How exciting!!! I actually sold $107.50 in the first two and a half weeks.  I was able to pay my rent and have a little left over.  Now, whatever I make on the next couple of weeks is overage.  Yippee!!!

It is really strange, some of the things people bought. But, as they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure.  I jokingly said that "I think I'm the candle booth." It is truly amazing how many misc. candles you accumulate over the years.  I sold 13 in 2 1/2 weeks.

And since my husband is a firefighter, I don't get to burn them.  Hmmmm.... Wonder why??????

My Thanksgiving Sale Bargain - Cricut Cake Machine

I did very little bargain shopping this year.  I didn't even go out on Black Friday  because I was setting up my Flea Market Booth at Angel's Crossing.   I did, however, get a Pre-Thanksgiving online deal.  I bought the Cricut Cake Machine. It regularly retails for $199.99.  I paid just $49.99!!!  That is a $150.00 savings.  I also purchased three cartridges at $29.99 ea. Regular retail is between $55.99- $59.99 ea. on those.  All in all I saved a total of $236.00!

Cricut cake in action cutting Wilton sugar sheets into snowflakes.
Works great, except you have to adjust the pressure deep enough.  I had it too light and it tore my sheet on the first cut.

Flea Market Booth

This past week I started a new venture.  Why??? I'm still trying to figure that out.  I have been wanting to clean out my house (since it is exploding at the seams).  Several of my friends have opened booths at the new Angel's Crossing Antique Mall and Flea Market in Alma, AR.

So I thought I'd give it a try.  Little did I know how much work it would be.  And we all know I what I need is another job. I started with a blank booth.  Literally.  I even had to provide my own shelves.  It is still a work in progress, but I'm happy to be cleaning out my house so I can buy more.  It's truly amazing what you can accumulate in ten years.  Yes, it has been almost ten years (this May).
Thanks to my brother for cutting the boards for the shelves.  Then I added a little paint.
Luckily my husband had the day off, and the patience, to help me install the shelves in the booth.  Then I started loading it up.  Remember it is still a work in progress.

QUESTION: Do people actually sell stuff at these places?

ANSWER:  Yes!  One of my friends averages a couple hundred dollars a month, and she really enjoys doing it.  I set my booth up on Black Friday, when I came back on Saturday I noticed some of my things were already gone.  And after I left on Saturday I got a phone call saying more of my things had sold.

Right now, I am hoping to be able to pay the booth rental fee and still come out a little ahead.  I have gained a lot of extra space in my closets and attic, and it is easier than setting up and taking down a yard sale several days in a row.

Pillsbury Coupons

I just found this link that has higher value coupons that you can print.  It is for Pillsbury coupons.  At first they appear to be the same as the ones found in the newspaper or off of coupons.com, but some of them are $.10 more than those found in other online databases.

http://www.pillsbury.com/coupons-promotions

For example:  Honey nut Cheerios - reg. coupon = $.50 off, Pillsbury coupon = $.60 off.

Hey $.10 is $.10.

Dragon Spirit Store and More

It has been a while since I last blogged.
Who has time to bargain shop when you have started running a sweat shop (minus the poorly paid children) in your own home?
I didn't realize that part of being the dance team coach meant that I had to embroider 10 zebra striped duffle bags, 14 jackets, make 25 little league cheerleader hair bows, iron on 25 rhinestone shirts, and make 5 dragon tutus!
Well, I guess I'm just nuts!!!
At one point I asked my husband about my little sweat shop.  As he was in the other room (putting stickers on plastic megaphones for me) he asked me where I was hiding all of the children doing the work.  LOL!!!
And my poor assistant coach has been at her home making 55 bottle cap necklaces, and scrabble tile earrings too!

WHY??????

Because we have just opened up a Dragon Spirit Store.
Since Mountainburg no longer has a booster club for the school, there is basically no place to buy fan gear for the ball games.  So, being the idiot I am....... I decided to yes, take on another thing.  All of the profits earned go to our wonderful Dragon Flames Dance Team.

Here are some samples of our handiwork:

All of these items, and more, are available at the home ballgames. Come and see us!

Orvile Redenbacher's Pop Up Bowl Review

Last night I tried the new Orville Redenbacher's Pop Up Bowl, Classic Recipe.  I was given a FREE box of it at the AFM Food Show Last week.  The box contained 3 packages of popcorn. The bowl sat up nicely, and I didn't get my hands greasy with butter while eating it.  However, 2 1/2 minutes was too long for it to cook, and I burned it.

The directions were clearly printed on the back, with the recommended cooking time, and how to open the bowl once popped.  I did however, have trouble opening it after it cooked.  You do not tear the film straight across, you have to pull up and then over, while holding the paper bowl in place.

All in all, I liked this product.  (If I hadn't burned it!) The flavor was good, and the bowl sat up nicely on the table.  I did not get my hands greasy by putting them against the sides of the bag.  I did not burn my hands with steam when opening it, like I usually do with a regular bag.

Enjoy!

New! Extra Dessert Delights Gum

This week I was able to try a new product, Extra Dessert Delights Gum. The sales rep was extremely nice and gave me full size packages of four flavors to try and order into my grocery store if I liked them. I am currently chewing the Mint Chocolate Chip one right now as I type this post. http://www.extragum.com/

He said that the concept behind the product evolved because Extra is a sponsor of television's "The Biggest Loser."  While working with the contestants, the company asked,"What is it that you miss the most when dieting?"  The contestants replied, "Eating desert that actually tastes like dessert."  So, the Extra Gum company developed their new "Dessert Delights" line of Sugar Free gum.  Even Diabetics can chew this and still get the same taste of eating a real dessert without all of the sugar.

I was able to try Mint Chocolate Chip (which is their #1 seller), Strawberry Shortcake, Orange Cream Pop, and my favorite, Apple Pie.

Let me just say, that all of these flavors do last forever.  The Apple Pie was my favorite because it tasted just like a real apple pie.  The Strawberry Shortcake had a very strong strawberry taste.  I liked it too, my mother said it was too strong for her.  I liked the Chocolate Chip Mint next.  It did, however, have a very strong mint taste, which was a little too much for me.  At first I did think that it tasted just like the ice cream (which is my all time flavor).  But, after a while, I got tired of the mint taste.  Yes, I'm still chewing it as I type this. Taste is still strong.  Next, I liked the Orange Cream Pop. It reminds me of an old fashioned Dreamcicle.  But, it did have a little mint gum aftertaste in it.  That is why it was probably my least favorite of the four that I tried.

All in all, I liked them.  I can see where they would make a good dessert substitute, especially if you are on a diet.  Each package contains 15 sticks, and will probably run close to a dollar or a little more.  (I haven't made my store shelf tags for these yet.)  But, you do get a lot of bang for your buck.  The flavor will last an Extra Extra long time!

Affliated Foods Midwest Fall Food Show 2011

Affiliated Foods Midwest Fall Food Show

Last weekend, my mother and I attended the annual Affiliated Foods Midwest Fall Food Show and Annual Stockholders Meeting.

This is one of the few perks we have for owning a grocery store.

The good thing about the food show is you get to try all of the new products and you get to bring home LOTS of FREE samples. The problem is that the Food Show is in Omaha, NE. We have to fly 1hr. 40 min. and spend most of the day in airports to get it all back home to Arkansas.

I think I did even better shopping here, than at Walgreen's. (If you can imagine that!)

Here are a few pics of the show.  They aren't really good, I was too busy getting samples to remember to take pictures:

Fresh produce is always pretty.  New ideas probably coming soon to Bassham's Grocery.

These are some of my FREEBIES that I brought home

Eli and Nate liked the Bobby Banana that I got FREE from the Dole company.

There was no telling how much money I saved from this trip.  It was too numerous to add up!  Some of my freebies included:
(1) Full size bottle of Cookies BBQ Sauce
(1) Full size Jar of Cookies Salsa
(1) 3 pk. Box of Orville Redenbacher's Pop Up Bowl Popcorn
(1) Fairy Angels Doll (Christmas Present for my cousin's daughter)
(2) Bobby Banana Blow Ups as pictured above
????? Misc. Candy and Snacks (as pictured above)
(6) Sleeves of Pinnacle Gold Golf Balls
(4) Golf Towels
(2) T-Shirts from the ET Video company
(6) Misc. Baby items such as pacifiers, tub toys, washcloths, rattles (like Dollar Tree carries)
(1) Wooden Spoon
(3) Cake Decorating Tips
(10) Small Pillsbury Cookbooks retail value $4.99 ea.
AND MUCH MUCH MORE!!!!!!!!

Budget Meal - Sirloin steak

This week I enjoyed a budget saving meal. Using the same basic ingredients, I was able to get two different meals for the usual price of one.

Night #1:
Beef Fajitas
  •  1 lb. Boneless Top Sirloin Steak - $3.99 lb. (I think mine was maybe around 1/2 pound - 3/4 pound, so around $2.00). Slice this thin.
  • 1/2 Green Bell pepper, sliced thin (I sliced the rest up and froze for next time)
  • 1/2 Purple Onion ($.99 lb.), chopped (I chopped up the rest and froze)
  • 1/2 Container of White Mushrooms, sliced ($1.79) (The rest I used the next night)
  • 1/2 Packet of McCormick Fajita Seasoning (which I already had) (usually is $.99 though)
  • Flour tortillas, salsa, sour cream, shredded cheese (all already on hand)
In a skillet, heat one T. Spoon oil, cook steak until no pink, toss in peppers & onions, cook until tender, toss in mushrooms, add seasoning.  Cook until tender. Put in tortillas, add fixins, Enjoy!
Fast, inexpensive, and good!!!

Night #2:
Beef Stir Fry and Rice
Sorry the photo is dark. I took it with my IPhone.
  • In a skillet, heat meat & veggies from recipe above. Add in thin sliced carrots, frozen broccoli (which I had), the rest of the sliced mushrooms, and cook in some soy sauce.
  • Cook enough Minute rice (which I had) and serve with the beef and veggies.
Believe it or not, the soy masked the fajita flavor, so I had two completely different tasting meals.  All from the same steak and veggies.  I just spiced it up a little on the second night.

I basically fed myself and my husband for two nights, for under $7.00.

Apps review

I just purchased a translator app for my iPhone for $.99.  It is called Speech Translator.  I can testify that it actually works.  You are able to speak into your phone and it will actually translate and repeat what you said in the language of your choice.  The problem I have found with it is that it doesn't have the capability to go from Spanish (in Mexico) to English (US).  It only has the choice of Spanish (Americana Latina) to English (US).  For me, this kind of defeats the purpose of being able to take it on vacations. It did not translate my Spanish to the correct English.  Maybe I'm just really bad at speaking Spanish, or my Southern accent is incapable of being understood.

Tax Free Weekend Kohl's Deals!

This past weekend, August 6-7, was tax free weekend in Arkansas!  I made a trip to Kohl's (my fave), and Belk.  I checked out the clearance section first at Kohl's (always good!).  I did not have an extra coupon when I left home (like I usually do), but most of the time if you just ask if there is one, Kohl's will give you one.  I just had to ask and scored an extra 20% off everything.  One day the associate gave me the 30% off when I actually only had the 15% off just because I asked.  You have to word it just right like "You don't happen to have a 30% off in that stack somewhere do you?  I just have a 15% this time. " Hey, it works. Here's what I scored:

Vacation 2011

We just got back from our wonderful Eastern Caribbean Cruise.

We spent 7 nights aboard Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas

and cruised to St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and Cocoa Cay, Bahamas.

4-Wheelin Trip

Over Spring Break we went to Hatfield, AR for three days. We love to hike and ride the 4-wheeler. We especially love Geocaching. If you have never heard of Geocaching, it is basically fun for free. It is treasure hunting by GPS. Geocaching takes you to new and exciting places. On this trip we got to see an old turquoise mine. I even found a rock with some turquoise coloring on it. You can check out their site here. We stayed at Doc's Place at the Meadow Pine Cabins. What a beautiful place, and very reasonable!!

New Job

Yes, the rumors are true!  I have taken on another new job.  It is still unofficial, the school board hasn't met yet, but I will be helping coach the new Mountainburg Dragon Flames Dance Team next year.  Clinic and try-outs are this week.  Good luck to all the girls.  We are looking forward to the year ahead.  This is the first time since the 1990-1991 school year that we have had a dance team in Mountainburg.  This has put a slight damper on my bargain shopping and blogging though.
