Orvile Redenbacher's Pop Up Bowl Review

Last night I tried the new Orville Redenbacher's Pop Up Bowl, Classic Recipe.  I was given a FREE box of it at the AFM Food Show Last week.  The box contained 3 packages of popcorn. The bowl sat up nicely, and I didn't get my hands greasy with butter while eating it.  However, 2 1/2 minutes was too long for it to cook, and I burned it.

The directions were clearly printed on the back, with the recommended cooking time, and how to open the bowl once popped.  I did however, have trouble opening it after it cooked.  You do not tear the film straight across, you have to pull up and then over, while holding the paper bowl in place.

All in all, I liked this product.  (If I hadn't burned it!) The flavor was good, and the bowl sat up nicely on the table.  I did not get my hands greasy by putting them against the sides of the bag.  I did not burn my hands with steam when opening it, like I usually do with a regular bag.

New! Extra Dessert Delights Gum

This week I was able to try a new product, Extra Dessert Delights Gum. The sales rep was extremely nice and gave me full size packages of four flavors to try and order into my grocery store if I liked them. I am currently chewing the Mint Chocolate Chip one right now as I type this post. http://www.extragum.com/

He said that the concept behind the product evolved because Extra is a sponsor of television's "The Biggest Loser."  While working with the contestants, the company asked,"What is it that you miss the most when dieting?"  The contestants replied, "Eating desert that actually tastes like dessert."  So, the Extra Gum company developed their new "Dessert Delights" line of Sugar Free gum.  Even Diabetics can chew this and still get the same taste of eating a real dessert without all of the sugar.

I was able to try Mint Chocolate Chip (which is their #1 seller), Strawberry Shortcake, Orange Cream Pop, and my favorite, Apple Pie.

Let me just say, that all of these flavors do last forever.  The Apple Pie was my favorite because it tasted just like a real apple pie.  The Strawberry Shortcake had a very strong strawberry taste.  I liked it too, my mother said it was too strong for her.  I liked the Chocolate Chip Mint next.  It did, however, have a very strong mint taste, which was a little too much for me.  At first I did think that it tasted just like the ice cream (which is my all time flavor).  But, after a while, I got tired of the mint taste.  Yes, I'm still chewing it as I type this. Taste is still strong.  Next, I liked the Orange Cream Pop. It reminds me of an old fashioned Dreamcicle.  But, it did have a little mint gum aftertaste in it.  That is why it was probably my least favorite of the four that I tried.

All in all, I liked them.  I can see where they would make a good dessert substitute, especially if you are on a diet.  Each package contains 15 sticks, and will probably run close to a dollar or a little more.  (I haven't made my store shelf tags for these yet.)  But, you do get a lot of bang for your buck.  The flavor will last an Extra Extra long time!

Affliated Foods Midwest Fall Food Show 2011

Affiliated Foods Midwest Fall Food Show

Last weekend, my mother and I attended the annual Affiliated Foods Midwest Fall Food Show and Annual Stockholders Meeting.

This is one of the few perks we have for owning a grocery store.

The good thing about the food show is you get to try all of the new products and you get to bring home LOTS of FREE samples. The problem is that the Food Show is in Omaha, NE. We have to fly 1hr. 40 min. and spend most of the day in airports to get it all back home to Arkansas.

I think I did even better shopping here, than at Walgreen's. (If you can imagine that!)

Here are a few pics of the show.  They aren't really good, I was too busy getting samples to remember to take pictures:

Fresh produce is always pretty.  New ideas probably coming soon to Bassham's Grocery.

These are some of my FREEBIES that I brought home

Eli and Nate liked the Bobby Banana that I got FREE from the Dole company.

There was no telling how much money I saved from this trip.  It was too numerous to add up!  Some of my freebies included:
(1) Full size bottle of Cookies BBQ Sauce
(1) Full size Jar of Cookies Salsa
(1) 3 pk. Box of Orville Redenbacher's Pop Up Bowl Popcorn
(1) Fairy Angels Doll (Christmas Present for my cousin's daughter)
(2) Bobby Banana Blow Ups as pictured above
????? Misc. Candy and Snacks (as pictured above)
(6) Sleeves of Pinnacle Gold Golf Balls
(4) Golf Towels
(2) T-Shirts from the ET Video company
(6) Misc. Baby items such as pacifiers, tub toys, washcloths, rattles (like Dollar Tree carries)

Budget Meal - Sirloin steak

This week I enjoyed a budget saving meal. Using the same basic ingredients, I was able to get two different meals for the usual price of one.

Night #1:
Beef Fajitas
  •  1 lb. Boneless Top Sirloin Steak - $3.99 lb. (I think mine was maybe around 1/2 pound - 3/4 pound, so around $2.00). Slice this thin.
  • 1/2 Green Bell pepper, sliced thin (I sliced the rest up and froze for next time)
  • 1/2 Purple Onion ($.99 lb.), chopped (I chopped up the rest and froze)
  • 1/2 Container of White Mushrooms, sliced ($1.79) (The rest I used the next night)
  • 1/2 Packet of McCormick Fajita Seasoning (which I already had) (usually is $.99 though)
  • Flour tortillas, salsa, sour cream, shredded cheese (all already on hand)
In a skillet, heat one T. Spoon oil, cook steak until no pink, toss in peppers & onions, cook until tender, toss in mushrooms, add seasoning.  Cook until tender. Put in tortillas, add fixins, Enjoy!
Fast, inexpensive, and good!!!

Night #2:
Beef Stir Fry and Rice
Sorry the photo is dark. I took it with my IPhone.
  • In a skillet, heat meat & veggies from recipe above. Add in thin sliced carrots, frozen broccoli (which I had), the rest of the sliced mushrooms, and cook in some soy sauce.
  • Cook enough Minute rice (which I had) and serve with the beef and veggies.
Believe it or not, the soy masked the fajita flavor, so I had two completely different tasting meals.  All from the same steak and veggies.  I just spiced it up a little on the second night.

I basically fed myself and my husband for two nights, for under $7.00.

Walgreens 9/3/11

Here is today's Walgreen's Shopping.  $78.73 Saved today. Not as good as I had hoped, but not too shabby either:
