Bargains

This page will feature all of the bargain shopping I have done during the week or any deals that I see coming up for the week ahead.

Every week I have people ask me "How do you do it?"  Well, plain and simple here's how:

1.  Get coupons from the Sunday paper (without stealing papers), and (not or) print them from the internet.  There are several sites linked to this blog that have great coupons and advice all of the time.  Almost all of the products you like have websites or facebook pages with printable coupons.

2.  Match your coupons to the store sales.  Ex. If Walgreen's has Colgate Toothpaste on sale, and you have a $1.00 off coupon, then using it in combination with the sale = extra savings.

3.  Some stores (like Walgreen's) allows you to combine their store coupons with a manufacturer's coupon (one clipped or printed).  At Walgreen's, every month, there are in-store coupon books that can be picked up right inside the door.  These are the store coupons I refer to. Ex. This week I bought U by Kotex sale price 2/$7.00 - (2) $1.00 manufacturer's coupons clipped from Sunday's paper - (1) $2.00 in-store coupon from Walgreen's book.  Final Price = 2/$3.00 or $1.50 ea.  not bad considering these are almost $5.00/box regular price.

4.  Most stores allow one coupon per item.  Make sure you have the same number of items in your cart as you do coupons.  Small items known as "filler items" can be counted.  Ex. for the Kotex scenario listed in #3, I had two items + 3 coupons.  That doesn't match up.  This is where you can use "filler items".  I like to use Laffy Taffy at Walgreens.  It only costs $.15 and I like it.  Yes, this does work.  I do it almost every trip. This also works for using register rewards.  Those are counted the same as a coupon, so make sure you have plenty of filler items to reach the full benefit of your coupons.

5.  Use store loyalty cards.  Where I live, these don't exist for grocery stores, except for the movie rental card at my family grocery store, Bassham's Grocery.

The more you rent, the more points you earn for free rentals!  Shop at Bassham's!

Sorry, I had to put in a plug.

I have a separate wallet like thing just for store cards.  Some have punch cards like Mazzio's Pizza and my photography store. Other's have reward cards for clubs like "Christopher and Banks", "Eddie Bauer Friends", and "Office Depot Star Teacher Rewards".  Teachers:  there are reward clubs and discount clubs just for you: Staples, Office Depot, Barnes & Noble, Books A Million, Joann Craft Stores, and even Michael's Crafts.  All you have to do is ask and usually show ID such as a name tag or pay stub.  Even my local Gino's Pizza by the Slice gives teachers a discount.  Petal's and Stems Florist in Alma, AR is also giving school employee discounts right now (August 2011).

6.  Store credit cards are not always bad.  Yes, you do have to pay the balance in full every month to make this work for you the best.  If not, you will get in major debt!!!  Getting store cards for your most frequently shopped at stores will give you major rewards.   This is how your personal information gets on their coupon mailing and emailing lists. I love Kohl's, so I have a Kohl's card.  I receive coupons in the mail on a regular basis.  They are usually good for an extra 15%, 20%, or even 30% off your purchase.  Their coupons always include everything in the store, even sale and clearance items.  I say this, but I'm not sure about the Kohl's for Kids charity purchases and gift cards.  Those two may be the only exclusions.

What's the secret to Victoria's Secret??? Opening up an Angel Reward's account or just using your credit or debit card to buy something will usually put them on the list.  If your husband buys something for you with his card, then you are both on the list.  I can't remember the last time I actually paid for underwear.  LOL! VS sends out free panty coupons several times a year, to me and my husband, LOL!!.  No purchase required.  Having the credit card will earn you points for free stuff too.

These are just some of the ways I have learned to save.  Check out my travel page for more discount travel info.
